General

Economics is the study of the relationships that exist among economic policies, income, resource allocation of scarce resources, expenditure, savings and wealth or economic development at both micro and macro level.

Philosophy

The philosophy underlying Economic Education programme is predicated on the needs of the society to produce graduate teachers who posses critical thinking and economic analytical skills for the analyses of economic policies and evaluation of economic development at both individual and public level, with the aim of  proffering remedial measures where necessary in addition to producing graduate teachers who posses adequate teaching skills for the effective implementation of Economics curriculum at the senior secondary school level.

Aims

The aim of teaching the subjects are to:

  • produce graduate teachers who are abreast with the principles of economics and their applications in classroom practices.
  • provide student teachers with sound knowledge of the working of the economy and its use in different settings.
  • equip graduate teachers with a firm foundation of knowledge and analytical tools and skill, for the solution of economic problems.
  • develop in students a wide range of skills which will enable them become employed or self employed
  • produce graduate teachers who can apply relevant teaching techniques in instilling economic knowledge and skills in their students.

Admission Requirements

Candidates who wish to study Education Economics must have obtained a credit in English, Economics, Mathematics and two other relevant subjects.

BACHELOR OF DEGREE IN GEOGRAPHY EDUCATION – B.Sc (ED. GEOGRAPHY)

General

Geography is the study of the structures and forms of the earth (Physical environment) as well as its inhabitants (aquatic, terrestrial and serial) and the nexus between them.

Philosophy

The philosophy behind Geography degree programmes is the production of well equipped graduates who will make meaningful contributions to the development of Nigeria and the world at large through exposure to geographical knowledge.

Aims and objectives:

The aims and objectives are to:

  • provide students with sound knowledge of Geography and workings of the society.
  • educate students on geographical theories and methods and prepare them as effective teachers,
  • inculcate in students, the attitude of application of Geography in solving societal problems
  • make students appreciate the importance of Geography and its contributions to development
  • develop in students useful competencies for work in public and private sectors as well as being self employed.
  • provide students with knowledge base to further studies in Geography and other courses involving Geography.

Admission Requirements

Candidates who wish to study Geography Education must in addition to meeting the requirements for the faculty, must have obtained a credit in mathematics, Geography, English and any other two relevant subjects.

General

Social Studies is an interdisciplinary programme which draws and infuses contents from various disciplines (social sciences and humanities) in its study of man in his environment.  In adopts analytical approach in identifying societal problems inorder to proffer solutions to them.

Philosophy

The philosophy of Social Studies Degree programme revolves on the need for us to produce social studies graduate teachers who are globally competent, effective, efficient and responsive to trendy social issues and educational matters for effective development of Nigeria, Africa and the world at large.

Aims

  • To systematically expose student teachers to other relevant related disciplines as well as principles, theories and general pedagogies for the effective implementation of Social Studies.
  • To expose student teachers to broad knowledge of social studies contents and the contents of other derivative or source discipline necessary for their preparation as effective Social Studies teachers.
  • To help students develop skills to solve problems from a holistic point of view.
  • To provide student teachers with learning experiences that will help them acquire contents and skills that will foster their understanding of self, their students, and the world for the promotion of development

Admission Requirements

Candidates who wish to study Education Social Studies must have obtained a credit in English, a passin Mathematics and a credit in four other relevant subjects.

Political Science is the systematic study of power acquisition, and utilization which impact on the formation of public policies and system of governance generally.

The philosophical underpinning of Political Science is geared towards the production of graduate teachers who posses extensive knowledge, critical mind, requisite ability and skills to comprehend, analyse, predict and influence the factors which impact on power relationship, governance system and the teaching and learning of government.

Aim

The aims are to:

  • produce students teachers with adequate knowledge of the contents and principles of political science and its application in classrooms.
  • expose student teachers to education principles, theories, and methodologies and their application in the effective implementation of senior secondary school government in classrooms
  • inculcate sound knowledge of how the society is organized and the skills to apply in providing solutions to socio-political problems and conflicts.
  • instill in students teachers a sense of appreciation of the dynamics of politics and its impact on socio-economic development of the wider world.

Admission Requirements

Candidates who wish to study Education Political Science must have obtained English, Government or History and any other three (3) relevant subjects at credit level and a pass in Mathematics.
